Clerk Mentor Program

The Iowa League of Cities Clerk Mentor Program matches experienced city clerks (mentors) with new or less experienced clerks (mentees) who feel they need a little extra guidance. The League’s clerk mentors are willing to share their skills, knowledge, and experiences to help set up mentees for success in the city clerk profession.
Depending on the assistance needed, mentoring can occur over the phone, via email, and when necessary in person.

Mentors Role

Mentors answer questions related to ordinances, resolutions, budgets, minutes, tips of best practices, and other functions of the job by answering technical questions and describing procedures. In addition, mentors provide moral support and encouragement, and introduce their mentees to others in the profession at meetings and conferences.

Mentor Requirements

A minimum of three years experience as a city clerk, and serving as a city clerk within the last five years is required to become a mentor in the program. In addition, at least 15 hours of approved continuing education over the last year is required.

Mentee’s Role

A mentee should exhibit a strong desire to learn new skills and further develop existing skills and abilities. A mentee determines the guidance she or he needs and takes initiative to ask for help or advice when appropriate.

To become a mentor or for assistance to be connected with a clerk mentor, call 515.244.7282 or email the Iowa League of Cities mailbox@iloc.flywheelsites.com.
